Introduction
Linear Lighting
Industrial finishes demand precision lighting — from spray booths to detail bays. Our linear lighting category offers:
- Explosion-proof options available
- Seamless connectivity for continuous runs
- Multiple mounting options
- Energy-efficient LED technology
- Various lens options for different beam patterns
- Durable construction for harsh environments
- Easy installation and maintenance
Let's dive into how our solutions ensure safety and performance in paint spray booths and other hazardous-rated areas.
Why Paint Booth Lighting Requires Specialized Fixtures
In spray-finishing environments, ordinary lighting is insufficient—not just for efficacy but for safety. The Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) Section 20 (Rules 20-300 to 20-314) specifically addresses hazardous finishing operations:
"Rules 20-302 to 20-314 apply where paints, lacquers, or other flammable finishes are regularly or frequently applied … and where volatile flammable solvents or thinners are used or where readily ignitable deposits or residues from such paints, lacquers, or finishes may occur." – Rule 20-300
Under Rule 20-302, the following areas shall be Zone 1 locations:
- Interiors of spray booths and their exhaust ducts (with adequate ventilation)
- All space within 6 m horizontally in any direction, up to 1 m above the goods to be painted, from spraying operations outside the booth
- All space within 6 m of dip tanks and drain boards, extending up to 1 m above them
- All other spaces where hazardous concentrations of flammable vapours are likely to occur
For open-face spray booths, the Zone 2 location shall extend at least 1.5 m from the open face. For closed spray booths or rooms, the Zone 2 location extends 1 m in all directions from any openings. – Rule 20-302
The takeaway:
- Inside a spray booth is typically Class I Division 1 (C1D1 / Zone 1)
- The area just outside (up to ~1.5 m) is typically Class I Division 2 (C1D2 / Zone 2)
- Your lighting must carry the appropriate hazard-rating certification
Key Lighting Targets for Paint Booths
To ensure both visibility and finish-quality, many industry sources target ≈100–150 foot-candles (≈1,100–1,600 lux) at the work plane.
Here's a guideline table for a ~200 sq ft (~18.6 m²) booth:
Target Foot-Candles | Approx Lux | Approx Lumens Needed* |
---|---|---|
100 fc | ~1,075 lux | ~45,000 lm |
120 fc | ~1,300 lux | ~54,000 lm |
150 fc | ~1,600 lux | ~65,000 lm |
*Assumes typical light-loss factors and uniformity. For your 200 sq ft booth we recommend four linear fixtures in the ~10,000–12,000 lm each range.
We'll generate a free photometric layout to show exactly how your booth can hit these targets using our products.

Why Choose These Fixtures for Spray Booths
- Hazard-rated: Certified for C1D2 / C2D1 (and upgrade path to C1D1 if required) hazardous locations
- High lumen output + uniform distribution: Ideal for achieving the 100–150 fc target across your spray booth floor
- Flexible mounting: Ceiling- or wall-mounted, trunnion or swivel options to hit critical aiming (walls + 45° ceilings) and minimize shadows
- Durable for harsh environments: IP66 housings, corrosion-resistant finishes, solvent-resistant lenses — built for paint booth atmospheres
- Ease of service: Modular drivers, accessible optics, suitable for maintenance in classified areas
Free Lighting Layout Offer
We want to help you get it right the first time. Here's what we'll do for free:
- Send us your booth dimensions (L × W × H)
- Provide any photos of existing lighting or wall/ceiling finishes (if retrofit)
- We'll deliver a custom photometric layout showing:
- Predicted foot-candles (fc) and lux levels
- Fixture placement + aiming angles
- Mounting height recommendations
- Estimated number of fixtures and lumen output per fixture
Once you see the layout, you'll have full confidence you're meeting both illumination performance and hazard-location compliance.
Next Steps
- If you're performing a new installation, share your booth dimensions and let us tailor the layout
- If you're doing a retrofit, send photos or model numbers of your current fixtures and we'll match the equivalent wattage/lumen output and show how our Vector series upgrades the space
- Want to verify your classification (C1D1 vs C1D2)? We'll help interpret your plan or insurance wording so you select the correct rated lighting
